7th Grade Exploratory Technology Syllabus
Introductory Drafting
In the Drafting Unit of this course the primary focus will be on students learning how to measure using a standard sixteenth inch scale. Students will also learn how to use drafting tools to create various geometric drawings. Neatness and clarity of the drawings will be stressed, however, the primary focus when assessing drawings will be on accuracy of measurement. For this unit, students will need to complete six (6) drawings in order to move on to the next unit.

Structural Engineering
In this unit students will learn how to design and build a model of a truss style bridge. Students will use an algebraic formula to help them in selecting a stable design. They will also use a bridge simulation software so they can test their design to get a better idea of the performance. Then, using measuring and drafting skills, students will create a full size drawing of the design to use as a template in the construction of the model. Safety is stressed as the students will learn to use some simple wood working tools in order to build the bridge. When completed we will test the bridge by adding weight to it to see how much it can hold before destruction!
Assignments:
Structural Stability Formula
Bridge Design Sheet
Bridge Project Rubric
Newton's Laws of Motion
During this unit we will study Newtons three laws of motion and how they affect us and our world around us. We will use math skills to predict how objects will perform/react when forces are applied to them. The final project of the course will be for the students to design and build a vehicle that is powered by a single mouse trap. Most of the materials will be provided for the students on this project. However, students are allowed to bring in their own materials on this project as long as they adhere to the rules of the project.
Assignments:
Law's of Motion Worksheets
Mousetrap Car Description Description & Rules
Mousetrap Car Rubric
